MLB: 2026 National League Champion
🗂 Part of event: MLB: 2026 National League Champion →💡 What the odds say
Most likely: Los Angeles Dodgers at about a 42% chance.
The field is moderately concentrated with the top three teams commanding 73% of the probability, but the biggest recent shift is the Dodgers' sustained lead at 43%, reinforced by Shohei Ohtani's NLCS Game 4 heroics earning him two ESPYS on July 17, which underscores his postseason impact and keeps L.A. as the clear favorite.
📊 Base rate: Since the wild-card era began in 1995, the top seed in the National League has won the pennant about 30% of the time, making the Dodgers' 43% odds a significant premium over historical averages.
What's driving it
- • The Dodgers' lead is anchored by Shohei Ohtani's NLCS Game 4 heroics, which won him two ESPYS on July 17, highlighting his clutch postseason performance that directly boosts L.A.'s championship credibility (Yahoo Sports, Jul 17).
- • The Brewers' 19% odds reflect their strong second-half projection, as ESPN's July 16 preview ranked them among the top teams post-All-Star break, with a deep pitching staff and balanced lineup (ESPN, Jul 16).
- • The Braves' 12% share is supported by their consistent power and recent walk-off win by Rafael Devers on July 25, though that game was against the Angels and doesn't directly shift NL pennant odds (Times West Virginian, Jul 25).
Why the front-runners lead
- • The Dodgers' 43% odds are driven by their league-best payroll and star power, with Ohtani's postseason heroics providing a proven clutch factor that elevates their ceiling in a short series.
- • The Brewers' 19% share is backed by a deep rotation and strong second-half projections, making them the most credible challenger to L.A. in the NL.
- • The Braves' 12% odds reflect their perennial contention and recent walk-off win, though their path requires overtaking both the Dodgers and Brewers in a competitive field.
Why it's still open
- • The Phillies at 9% and Cubs at 7% could overtake the leaders if their lineups heat up in the second half, as both have the offensive firepower to win a short series despite inconsistent pitching.
- • The Cardinals at 3% and Diamondbacks at 2% are long shots but have recent playoff experience and could surge if they secure a wild-card spot and get hot in October.
- • The field's 27% combined probability for teams outside the top three means any of the remaining 13 candidates could emerge, especially if injuries or slumps hit the front-runners.
What to watch
- • The MLB trade deadline on July 31, 2026, could reshape the race if a contender like the Dodgers or Brewers acquires a star pitcher or bat, likely boosting their odds further.
- • The start of the NL Division Series in early October 2026 will clarify which teams are truly competitive, with early eliminations collapsing odds for losers and concentrating probability on survivors.
- • The All-Star break results and second-half projections, already highlighted by ESPN on July 16, will continue to shift odds as teams' playoff odds update weekly.
