Despite Trump's recent escalation rhetoric, the probability of a full-scale invasion has actually declined in the past week, suggesting the market views the threats as posturing rather than imminent action, especially given the lack of overnight strikes and a new maritime incident with Ukraine diverting attention.
📊 Base rate: Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has launched a major ground invasion of a sovereign nation only twice (Iraq 2003 and Afghanistan 2001), giving a base rate of less than 1% per country-year; the current 27% odds for an Iran invasion within 18 months are therefore extremely high relative to historical precedent.
What's driving it
- • Lack of overnight U.S. strikes on July 25, despite earlier threats, reduces immediate invasion risk (NBC News, Jul 25)
- • Trump's 'locked and loaded' rhetoric is offset by concerns over rising domestic costs, suggesting political constraints (NBC News, Jul 24)
- • A separate incident involving a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea introduces a new geopolitical distraction, potentially delaying or complicating U.S.-Iran tensions (WANA News Agency, Jul 25)
- • Ongoing U.S. strikes against Iran and Houthis, described as 'punishment,' are limited in scope and not an invasion, reinforcing the No case (CBS News, Jul 24)
The case for YES
- • President Trump is explicitly weighing a 'massive attack' on Iran and has stated the U.S. is 'locked and loaded,' indicating high-level intent (Time, Jul 24; NBC, Jul 24)
- • Iran has rejected a cease-fire proposal, removing a diplomatic off-ramp and increasing the likelihood of military escalation (Time, Jul 24)
- • The U.S. has already carried out multiple strikes on Iran, and further punitive action could escalate into a full invasion (CBS News, Jul 24)
The case for NO
- • No ground invasion has occurred despite months of tension, and the absence of strikes on July 25 suggests continued restraint (NBC News, Jul 25)
- • Domestic economic concerns are rising, making a costly protracted invasion politically unpopular (NBC News, Jul 24)
- • New geopolitical complications, such as the Ukraine-Iran maritime incident, are diverting attention and resources away from an invasion plan (WANA News Agency, Jul 25)
What to watch
- • Any formal announcement of a U.S. ground troop buildup near Iran would significantly increase Yes probability
- • A direct Iranian military response to U.S. strikes could trigger a spiral toward invasion, raising odds
- • If no major escalation occurs by mid-August 2026, momentum for a No resolution will strengthen

Democratic Presidential Nominee 2028
The field is virtually nonexistent: only two candidates register at 1% each, and no one has broken 5%, making this the most open Democratic nomination race in modern history. The single biggest recent shift is the DNC's decision to put South Carolina first in the 2028 primary calendar (Axios, Jul 25), which could reshape candidate strategies and favor a different type of contender.

Despite Newsom's commanding lead, the field is far from settled: the 20% 'Other' share and AOC/Ossoff's recent gains per Action Network (Jul 8) suggest a pool of anti-Newsom sentiment waiting for a viable alternative.
