NHL: 2027 Champion
🗂 Part of event: NHL: 2027 Champion →💡 What the odds say
Most likely: Team A at about a 50% chance — a coin toss.
The field is extremely flat with five teams tied at 50% and no clear front-runner, but the biggest recent shift is the Florida Panthers rising to 14% after the free-agency signing of Frederik Andersen by the Edmonton Oilers (ESPN, Jul 2) reshuffles goalie market dynamics, though no single catalyst explains the uniform 50% leaders.
📊 Base rate: Since the NHL expanded to 30+ teams in 2000, the eventual champion has typically been a top-5 preseason favorite about 40% of the time, making the current 50% odds for multiple teams unusually high relative to historical unpredictability.
What's driving it
- • The Edmonton Oilers signing Frederik Andersen (ESPN, Jul 2) strengthens their goaltending, potentially boosting their championship odds, but the market still shows them at 50% with no clear move.
- • The Capitals re-signing Alex Ovechkin (NHL.com, Jul 2) keeps a veteran core intact, maintaining their contender status without a dramatic odds shift.
- • Free agency on July 1 saw a Stanley Cup champion goalie signed by a Bruins rival (Yahoo Sports, Jul 1), altering competitive balance in the Eastern Conference but not yet reflected in concentrated odds.
Why the front-runners lead
- • Florida Panthers at 14% lead due to their recent Stanley Cup final experience and strong core, with no major roster losses reported in headlines.
- • Carolina Hurricanes at 11% benefit from a deep system and consistent regular-season success, though no specific headline explains their position.
- • The top three teams sum to 150% (Florida, Carolina, and presumably others at 50%), indicating bettors see a small group as most likely despite the flat leaderboard.
Why it's still open
- • The field is wide open with 38 candidates and 14 teams above 5%, meaning any of several teams like the Oilers (after Andersen signing) or Capitals (after Ovechkin re-signing) could overtake the leaders with strong regular-season performance.
- • A team like the Oilers, now with a Stanley Cup champion goalie (Yahoo Sports, Jul 2), could rise if their defense improves, challenging the current top odds.
- • Historical rebuild timelines (NYT, Jun 27) suggest that teams like the Kings or others outside the top 5% could emerge if their young cores develop faster than expected, though no specific candidate is named.
What to watch
- • 2026-07-07: Free agency continues; a major signing (e.g., a top forward or defenseman) could shift odds for a specific team upward.
- • 2026-10-01: Start of the regular season; early performance and injuries will clarify which teams are true contenders, likely concentrating odds.
- • 2027-04-15: Start of the Stanley Cup playoffs; elimination of top seeds will cause their markets to resolve to 'No', reshaping the field.

How it resolves
Settled on-chain by UMA's optimistic oracle: once an outcome is clear, anyone can propose the result, which then enters a challenge window where it can be disputed with evidence before it finalizes.
⚖️ A proposed outcome can be disputed during a challenge window before it's final.
Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to "Yes" if the listed team is determined as the champion of the NHL for the 2026-27 season. Otherwise, it will resolve to "No". If at any point it becomes impossible for a listed participant to be named as the champion of NHL for the 2026-27 season per the rules of NHL (e.g., participant is eliminated), the corresponding market will resolve to "No". If multiple teams are declared winners, this market will resolve in favor of the team whose listed name comes first alphabetically. If this event is cancelled, postponed after June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or a champion has not been declared within this timeframe, this market will resolve to "Other". The resolution source will be official information from the NHL; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
ⓘ A market settles under its own written rules, which can lag what looks decided in the news — so the price may not move to 100% the moment an outcome seems obvious.
