Precipitation in Hong Kong in July?
🗂 Part of event: Precipitation in Hong Kong in July? →💡 What the odds say
Most likely: 600mm+ at about a 95% chance — almost certain.
The field has sharply consolidated in 24 hours as heavy rain warnings and extreme weather in Hong Kong concentrate probability on the 525–600mm range, but the historical base rate for July totals above 600mm is well below 30%, making the front-runner odds look inflated by short-term storm events.
📊 Base rate: July total rainfall in Hong Kong exceeds 600mm in only about 15% of years over the last 30 years (Hong Kong Observatory climate data), so the current 30% odds for 600mm+ imply traders are pricing in exceptional monsoon activity.
What's driving it
- • An amber rainstorm warning was issued on July 15 (South China Morning Post, Jul 15), directly boosting the probability of higher precipitation brackets.
- • The Hong Kong Observatory warned of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms from a low-pressure area near HK on July 12–13 (The Standard, Jul 13; South China Morning Post, Jul 12), which likely shifted probability mass upward.
- • The 24-hour surge of +23 points in the leading bracket reflects the July 15 warning cascade, not a steady climatological increase — markets are reacting to a burst of immediate events.
Why the front-runners lead
- • The 600mm+ bracket leads at 30% because consecutive warning-level rain events in mid-July (South China Morning Post, Jul 15) have already accumulated significant precipitation, making a monthly total above 600mm achievable even if late July is drier.
- • The 525–550mm and 550–575mm brackets together account for 55% of the probability, showing that traders expect at least another week of above-normal rain based on the low-pressure system that is still active (The Standard, Jul 13).
Why it's still open
- • The field remains open because no single bracket exceeds 30%, and the 500-525mm bin at 26% could overtake if the rain events in the second half of July prove less persistent than currently forecast.
- • The sub-500mm categories (450-475mm and 475-500mm) collectively hold 21%, meaning a dry late July could allow them to catch up — but only if the remaining 12 days bring well-below-average rainfall.
What to watch
- • The Hong Kong Observatory's next 7-day outlook update around July 22 could lower or raise the probability of continued heavy rain; if dry weather is forecast, odds for 600mm+ may drop sharply.
- • Any upgrade of the rainstorm warning from amber to red (South China Morning Post, Jul 15) would further concentrate probability into the highest brackets (600mm+ and 575-600mm).
- • Resolution relies on the July 31 total from the Hong Kong Observatory; a late-month typhoon or tropical depression (common in late July) could push totals above 600mm or, if it misses, reduce expectations.

Resolution criteria
This market will resolve according to the total precipitation in mm in Hong Kong between July 1 and July 31, 2026, according to the Hong Kong Observatory. The resolution source for this market will be the Hong Kong Observatory, specifically the "Total Rainfall (mm)" figure for all days in July 2026 under the "Daily Extract" at the https://www.weather.gov.hk/en/cis/climat.htm link once figures are finalized for the specified range. If the reported data falls exactly between two brackets, this market will resolve to the higher bracket. If the relevant data is not available by October 7, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, another credible resolution source will be chosen. The resolution source for this market measures precipitation to 1 decimal place (e.g., 1.5), thus, this is the level of precision that will be used when resolving this market. Any revisions to precipitation recorded after data is finalized for this market's timeframe will not be considered for this market's resolution.
