The sharp drop in Yes odds over the past week reflects market belief that Iran's airspace closure is unlikely despite escalating US-Iran military strikes, because Iran has so far avoided a general commercial flight ban even as it activates air defenses and rejects cease-fire talks.
📊 Base rate: General airspace closures by states during active military conflicts are rare; since 2000, only a handful of countries (e.g., Ukraine in 2022, Libya in 2011) have fully closed their airspace to commercial traffic, making the historical prior for such an event well below 50%.
What's driving it
- • Iran activated air defense in Tehran amid regional tensions (Crypto Briefing, Jul 24), but this defensive posture has not yet translated into a general airspace closure, suggesting the market sees a gap between military readiness and a full commercial ban.
- • The US military completed a 13th consecutive night of strikes on Iran (Crypto Briefing, Jul 24), yet Iran has not responded by closing its airspace, indicating a pattern of restraint that the market is pricing into the 66% No odds.
- • Iran rejected a US cease-fire deal presented by the Iraqi leader (Crypto Briefing, Jul 23), removing a diplomatic off-ramp that could have de-escalated tensions and reduced closure risk, but the market still moved toward No, implying that rejection alone does not trigger a closure.
The case for YES
- • Iran's claim of a strike on US facilities that destroyed a Patriot system (Crypto Briefing, Jul 24) could provoke a severe US retaliation, potentially prompting Iran to close its airspace to prevent further attacks or to signal escalation.
- • Dubai and Middle East flight disruptions and cancellations amid US-Iran attacks (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East, Jul 24) show that commercial aviation is already being affected, and a general closure would be a logical next step if attacks intensify.
- • With 13 consecutive nights of US strikes and no cease-fire in sight, Iran may eventually view a full airspace closure as a necessary defensive measure to protect its military assets from further strikes.
The case for NO
- • Despite sustained US strikes and Iran's activation of air defenses, Iran has not yet imposed a general airspace closure, suggesting it is deliberately avoiding a move that would severely disrupt international aviation and invite further economic or military consequences.
- • Iran's rejection of the US cease-fire deal (Crypto Briefing, Jul 23) indicates it is willing to endure continued strikes without escalating to a full closure, which would be a major escalation beyond current hostilities.
- • The 24-hour and 7-day odds drops of 15 and 21 points respectively show that the market is consistently downgrading the probability of a closure, likely because each day without one reduces the remaining time window and reinforces the status quo.
What to watch
- • Any announcement of a formal US or allied no-fly zone over Iran or the Persian Gulf would likely increase Yes odds, as it could trigger a reciprocal closure by Iran.
- • A confirmed Iranian missile strike on a major civilian airport or commercial aircraft would sharply raise Yes odds, as it would signal a breakdown in aviation safety norms.
- • A diplomatic breakthrough, such as a new cease-fire proposal or direct talks, would likely decrease Yes odds, as it would reduce the immediate conflict intensity.

How it resolves
Settled on-chain by UMA's optimistic oracle: once an outcome is clear, anyone can propose the result, which then enters a challenge window where it can be disputed with evidence before it finalizes.

Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to “Yes” if Iran initiates a general closure of its airspace, that is not solely due to weather conditions, between market creation and the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. A “general closure” refers to a cancellation or suspension of aviation which is generally applicable to all commercial flights transiting Iranian airspace (“Tehran FIR”). A qualifying closure must apply generally to all of Iran or the Tehran FIR; limited cancellations, delays, or partial closures will not qualify. A closure which applies generally to commercial aviation across Iranian airspace, with limited exceptions for certain categories of flights, however, will qualify (e.g. exceptions for certain flights pre-approved by the Iranian Civil Aviation Authority may be permitted). Qualifying previous examples include the February 28, 2026 total closure of Iranian airspace (https://www.iranintl.com/en/202602289115) and the January 2026 total closure of Iranian airspace except to international flights with express governmental permission (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/iran-shuts-airspace-most-flights-flightradar24-says-2026-01-14/). Non-qualifying examples include the January 27, 2026 partial closure of Iranian airspace around the Strait of Hormuz (https://www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/iran-issues-airspace-notice-for-military-drills-near-strait-of-hormuz/3812508), the April 2024 closure of Iran’s western airspace (https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/iranian-airports-cancel-flights-until-monday-morning-2024-04-14/), and the January 25 - April 25, 2026 VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flights suspension which did not broadly close commercial aviation in Iran (https://www.intellinews.com/iran-suspends-general-aviation-and-vfr-flights-in-new-airspace-directive-421997/). Warnings, No-Fly-Zones, or other flight restrictions imposed by airlines or countries other than Iran will not be sufficient for a “Yes” resolution. Airspace closures which occur solely due to weather conditions, earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions, will not qualify. The primary resolution sources for this market will be official information from Iranian aviation authorities and a consensus of credible reporting.
