Will Donald Trump visit Canada in 2026?
🗂 Part of event: Which countries will Donald Trump visit in 2026? →💡 What the odds say
The market puts this at about a 11% chance — very unlikely.
No money — just record your call and see if you were right. Yes is at 11% right now.
Trump has never visited Canada as president, and current diplomatic friction over trade and the U.S.-Iran conflict makes a 2026 state visit unlikely, but a working trip tied to a summit or border issue remains the only plausible path.
📊 Base rate: Presidential travel to Canada is uncommon: the last sitting U.S. president to make an official visit was Barack Obama in 2016, and Trump himself did not visit Canada during his first term (2017-2021), giving a historical prior well below 50%.
What's driving it
- • Canadian PM Carney has publicly advised middle-power countries not to compete for favor with the U.S. (PBS, Jun 13), signaling a cooler bilateral relationship that reduces the diplomatic incentive for a Trump visit.
- • Canada's engagement with Saudi Arabia on energy and mining (Al Jazeera, Jul 9; CBC, Jul 9) suggests Ottawa is diversifying partnerships away from the U.S., lowering the urgency for a face-to-face Trump meeting.
- • A lack of concrete details from Carney's office on a call with Trump ahead of the NATO summit (CTV News, Jun 24) indicates no active planning for a presidential visit, reinforcing the 12% odds.
- • A poll showing a low percentage of Canadians view the U.S. as a reliable partner (CTV News, Jun 23) reflects public sentiment that makes a politically popular Trump visit to Canada less likely.
The case for YES
- • A joint U.S.-Canada border security initiative or a trade breakthrough on softwood lumber or dairy could create a functional reason for a working visit, even without warm diplomatic ties.
- • Trump could accept a multilateral summit invitation (e.g., a G7 or NATO event) hosted in Canada, which would count as a visit under the market's broad physical-entry definition.
- • Carney’s tone toward Trump softened ahead of trade talks (PBS, Jun 12), leaving the door open for a transactional arrangement that includes a presidential stop in Canada.
The case for NO
- • No official invitation or planning has been reported, and Carney’s office provided no details on their call with Trump (CTV News, Jun 24), suggesting a visit is not being actively arranged.
- • Canada is actively strengthening ties with Riyadh amid the U.S.-Iran ceasefire collapse (Al Jazeera, Jul 9; CBC, Jul 9), a strategic shift that reduces bilateral alignment with Washington.
- • Without a major summit or a spontaneous crisis requiring in-person talks, the historical pattern of infrequent U.S. presidential visits to Canada—and Trump’s own first-term absence—makes a 2026 trip improbable.
What to watch
- • A joint U.S.-Canada announcement of a bilateral forum or a North American leaders' summit before year-end (e.g., September to November) would sharply raise Yes odds.
- • An escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict that directly affects Canadian interests or border security could create an emergency reason for Trump to visit Canada (increase Yes).
- • If the U.S. presidential election cycle (primary debates, major policy addresses) fills Trump's calendar with domestic travel in late 2026, a foreign visit becomes less likely (increase No).

Whether or not Trump enters the country's airspace during the timeframe of this market will have no bearing on a positive resolution. The primary resolution source for this information will be official information from government of the United States of America, official information from Trump or released by his verified social media accounts (e.g. https://twitter.com/POTUS), however, a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.

Democratic Presidential Nominee 2028
The field is virtually nonexistent: only two candidates register at 1% each, and no one has broken 5%, making this the most open Democratic nomination race in modern history. The single biggest recent shift is the DNC's decision to put South Carolina first in the 2028 primary calendar (Axios, Jul 25), which could reshape candidate strategies and favor a different type of contender.
